Man or Machine
By Nova

It is believed by many that there are an infinite number of dimensions.  In these dimensions every possible choice or action is played out.

Peace, the ultimate goal of people everywhere.  Unfortunately war and hate are always there to prevent its creation.

War ravaged and tired Earth desperately sought an end to the battles. The Sanc Kingdom, lead by the Peacecrafts, had united the Earth’s nations.  The Colonies banded together behind the Winner Foundation.  OZ specials located on Earth and in the colonies defend against rebels and quickly stopped the sparks of conflict.  Peace was almost in their grasp.

There was only one pocket of resistance.  Six renegade scientists, who by means unknown, escaped execution and built huge weapons to terrorize the earth and colonies.  Now, the dream for peace has been crushed and chaos is eagerly gnawing at the alliances.

Hope shows herself in two lost warriors, but will they be enough to change the future of this dimension?

“Heero, what happened?”
“Shut up.”
“Where are we?”
“Shut up.”
“Thank you, mister informative.”
Duo closed his mouth at Heero’s patented death stare.  He looked around at his surroundings.  They appeared to be in a lab much like the ones Prof. G used on L2.  He could see the hunched back of someone in a lab coat through the observation window.  If he listened hard, he could barely hear the sounds of arguing.  Following Heero, they stealthily made their way to the door that separated the lab and the observation room.  Now they could hear the words more clearly.

“You are such a failure.”
“I will not fail.”
“This was your 32nd attempt to break the time barrier, you will never succeed.”
“Just because you were unable to do so, does not mean it is not possible.”
“Give it up. You will never recover your Gundam or your lover so stop crying.  It’s pointless anyway.  My doll will soon destroy the Sanc Kingdom and the world nation will be no more.  Once the Peacecraft’s blood stains the ground, no one will be able to stop us.  The Foundation is falling under our attacks as we speak.”
“I will succeed.”
“Ha, you are of no use to us now.  I just let you live because you amuse me.”
“WHY YOU!!”
“Now, now. Temper, temper.  I would hate to see you die at the hands of my doll before you see my victory.”
“Coward! You are afraid to face me! You hide behind your woman or what little of a woman is left!”
“Hahahaha. I’m not afraid. I just don’t care.  You stay here and continue your futile efforts.  My toy and I are going to play with Noin.  She still has some spirit left, haha, but not for long.”
A door closed with a muffled click.  They assumed that one scientist had left.  That just left one and with Duo and Heero both armed that should not be a problem.  Duo had just clicked the safety off when they heard the sound of shattering glass followed by a curse and a door slamming.

“Looks like it is going to happen the easy way this time, Heero,” Duo observed.
Heero didn’t reply. Opening the door, he entered the observation room and accessed the computer terminal.  Duo gazed about the room.  It looked like most laboratory control rooms.  There were a few instruments that he wasn’t familiar with, but that is not surprising since he always avoided the labs if possible.  What did catch his attention were the smashed eyeglasses.  He picked up the thin gold frames and turned them about in his hands.  There was something familiar about them, he just could not place where he had seen them before.
“Heero, is it just me or did those voices sound familiar?  I feel I should know them.”
“Let’s go.”
He followed Heero into the hall and they made their way through the hallways.  He noticed a definite lack in personnel.
“Heero, where are we and where are we going?”
“Barge, Hangar”
“How the hell did we get on Fortress Barge?”
“…”
“Do you think that shit about time travel has anything to do with it?”
“Hn.”
“Deathscythe is more cooperative,” Duo grumbled.

They quickly made their way toward the hangars.  He assumed they would be stealing mobile suits and escaping the fortress.  They stopped in front of a door marked H-2.  The door opened easily and Duo wondered at the lack of security.  They had yet to encounter any locked doors or guards.
“Heero, this seems a little too easy.  If this is fortress barge, there should be soldiers everywhere.”
“Yes.”
As they enter the hangar, Duo stops in shock.  He can’t believe his eyes.  It is not possible his mind screams, but standing against one wall is Deathscythe.  But it isn’t alone. Wing Zero, Heavyarms, and Epyon are also in the hangar.  “What the Hell?! How did they get my Gundam?”  Just when he thought it couldn’t get any weirder, someone stepped from the cockpit of Deathscythe.

“Hilde?”  He ran forward to stand in front of the gundam.  “Hilde, what are you doing here?”

Cold dead eyes stared down at him.  Hilde calmly jumped from the cockpit platform to land in a crouch directly in front of Duo.  As she stood up, Duo looked at her in confusion. Where had the happy laughing girl gone?  Where was the girl who took him to the circus in the middle of a war? “Hilde what’s wrong?”

No emotion flickered in her eyes as she wrapped steely fingers around Duo’s neck and lifted him off the ground.  Duo could only stare in horror as Hilde opened her mouth and spoke in a hollow computer voice.  “Intruder alert.  Intruder Deck 3 Hangar 2.”

“Hhh…e.e.e.r.r.o…”

A shot rang out and blood began to spread across the upper part of the arm with which Hilde held Duo.  She didn’t even twitch.  Turning to face Heero, she dropped Duo, who had been choked into unconsciousness.  Heero tried to shoot off a round now that Duo was out of the way, but Frisbee size metal disks floated around her giving off an energy force field.  A smaller version of the Mercurius’ force field, thought Heero.

Knowing his bullets would do no good against the force field, Heero headed for a weapon he knew would. Wing Zero.  He dashed across the hangar, quickly climbing in the cockpit.  Heero did not hear the expected retaliatory gunfire.  Punching in the security codes, Heero braced himself for the overwhelming Zero system.  Nothing happened.  He reinitiated the codes, still nothing.  None of the recent codes worked so he moved on to old codes.  As he ran through every security and maintenance code he could recall, he heard someone enter the hangar.

“What do you have there, 02?”

Heero stopped and slowly looked at the hangar floor.  He would know that voice anywhere.  Sure enough, the half metal doctor stood over Duo’s prostrate body.

“Intruder,” said Hilde in the same mechanical voice.  “Identified as Duo Maxwell, general and chief of security for the Winner foundation.  Last reported location, 6 days ago in Winner mansion on Earth.  Primary target for capture by Gundam 02.”

“Well, it looks like I won’t have to send you to earth after all.  He has come to us.  Take him to the interrogation chamber.”

Heero held his position as the Dr. J and Hilde, carrying Duo, left the hangar.  He was suspicious as to why she did not report his presence to the doctor.

“02, did Maxwell shoot you before you captured him?”

“No, Heero Yuy.”

“Ah, I will have to speak to Dr. Y about taking shots at you again.”

Dr. Y?  What is going on?  Heero climbed out of the cockpit and followed the Doctor.

Duo woke as Hilde was strapping him into a chair.

“Hilde, what’s goin’ on?”

Her eyes gazed back dead and empty with no recognition.

“What happened is that you have been captured Maxwell.”  Hilde stepped aside and he could see Dr. J speaking to him.  “Why do you call 02 by that name?”

“Because it is her name.  Why else? And what do you mean captured? Have you joined OZ?  Why would you do that after spending all that time building the Gundams?”

The doctor ignored the rest of his chatter and concentrated on his answer.  “She has no name.  I found her dying in a gutter on L2.  She was an orphan with no past and no future.”

He looked as if to continue, but just then a door slammed open.  In charged Wufei, a lab coat billowing behind him like a cape.

“Hello, Master C. I wondered which of you would get here first?”

“So, it is true.  02 captured Maxwell.  I had to get here quickly and ask my questions before Dr. Y gets his hands on him.  After he is through, there will be nothing left.”

“Hey, Wu Man!  Can you tell me what is going on?”

Wufei turned his angry gaze to Duo.  “You are here to answer my questions Maxwell.  Where is Nataku?”

“Nataku?  It’s your Gundam.  How am I supposed to know where it is?”

Wufei punched him in the face, knocking the chair over.  Duo groaned as his head struck the metal floor.  Hilde righted the chair and went back to the corner of the room.  Blood ran down from a cut on his forehead into his right eye.

“Where is Nataku? Where is she?!” Wufei screamed at him.

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t give me that.  There is nothing that goes on at the foundation that the general and chief does not know about.  Tell what I want to know and I will kill you before Yuy gets his hands on you.”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Wufei reared back to punch him again and was forestalled by Dr. J.

“Calm down Chang.  He is the Chief General. He will not just give you the information you desire.  Yuy will get him to tell us everything we want to know.  You saw how the Lightening Count crumbled.”

“Yes, but when he is thru with Maxwell his brain will be mush and Yuy will never request the information I want.”

“Oh, poor Wufey.  You are never going to get your woman back, are you?”  They all turned to look at the man leaning against the door jam of the still open door.  “I might help you if you beg.”

Duo stared in shock at Heero dressed in black slacks, a green dress shirt with a black vest and a white lab coat flung over his shoulder sneering at Wufei.

“I will never sink to your level,” snarled Wufei. “A man who had to turn the woman he wanted into a mindless robot, because it was the only way she would have him.”

Heero gave Wufei the death glare that Duo knew so well.  The look made him shudder as it never had before.  The eyes were empty with the promise off death and no remorse.  Those eyes said they could and would inflict pain without pity and with pleasure.  That man definitely was not his Heero.

“Calm down both of you.  I will not hesitate to have 02 kill him now, and then you both will lose,” stated Dr. J calmly, clicking his metal hand.

“You even try it old man and we will finally see who is stronger - 01 or 02.”

“No, you won’t Dr. Y.  We both know you would never risk ruining your precious Gundam in an equal battle against another Gundam.”  This brought an angry snort from Wufei, who looked on in hatred at those around him.  “Also,” Dr. J continued, “I have finally mastered the mind link between 02 and her UMS.  Before losing a battle, she would blow this entire space fortress apart.”

Heero’s eyes narrowed and gazed at the scientist, who was almost a cyborg himself. “Very good doctor.  It looks like you have been busy.”

“Yes, while you are playing games with the Sanc Kingdom, I have been perfecting 02 and the Deathscythe Hell - making her the perfect Gundam.  If my findings are correct, she should be able to defeat the four other Gundams in battle.  I lack data on 05 so I cannot be sure if it has improved since it left here.  But if 02 confronted it in direct battle, I see no problem with destroying it.”

“Awfully confident, aren’t you Doc?” commented Heero, a sneer marring his face, but, Duo noted, under that mask was a grudging respect for a worthy opponent.

“Yes, with good reason.  I started this group, but I am not so foolish as to not see your ambition.  If the chance came, I am sure you would kill me and take my place.  02 is now powerful enough to make you stop and think before doing anything rash.”

Duo tried to take in all that was going on, but it just didn’t make sense.  They talked as if Hilde is gundam 02, but then what is Deathscythe?  Wufei’s lover Nataku?  Who is this Heero and where did he come from?  Who is the woman Heero turned into a robot?  Is there another Duo, this Chief General?  What the hell have I gotten into? Where is Heero?
